Many people contact us about Blackberry and other mobile phones. For some, they are thinking of buying them, for others they have already bought but need configuring with the relevant settings for their email system. We’d like to take this opportunity to tell you a bit more about the Blackberry environment and what ESP can do for you on this subject.
First off, did you know that ESP can now arrange deals for you on Blackberry and indeed any other type of mobile phone? We have an independent mobile telephone advisor who can discuss your needs and advise on which phones are best for you! Contact ESP sales team for more info.
If you have decided on Blackberry, you do need to think about how they will integrate with your existing IT system. Blackberries are typically used in two types of IT environment – either by one or two individuals who work alone or out of the office a lot, or by larger groups of staff where there is a server dedicated to running the Blackberry synchronisation software. For many ESP-supported clients, this poses a question – which type of environment is best for you? The answer is quite straightforward - If you only need email-on-the-go, ESP staff can make a small change to your server or domain-hosting and give you some settings which you can use on the phone to collect your work email. You can then use the ‘Desktop Manager’ software, which came with the Blackberry, to synchronise calendar and contacts when you are in the office. ESP staff are able to do this for you, at a small cost.
If – on the other hand – you need your Blackberry to synchronise email, calendar and contacts when outside the office, you will need a server, and the Blackberry Enterprise Server software. Thankfully there is an Express version of this software available free-of-charge which will suffice for organisations with less than 50 Blackberry devices. The not-so-good news is that this software is fairly resource hungry. We therefore have to make checks on your server before it is installed to see whether it is possible to run it or not. Please do therefore get in touch if you are considering this option!
