Buying a PC? Help us Help you
Tuesday, 27 March 2007

Whether its financial year end or not, buying new PC's (or laptops for that matter) can be a bit of a chore. We understand that our customers need answers quickly and want the best prices on an official quote in time for budget deadlines. Yet sometimes it can take a few days to finalise these quotes. Why?

Buying a PC is about more than just having a nice looking box delivered. There is the software, networking, user environment and installation details to think about too. When our sales team get asked for a quote, they always have a 'checklist' at the back of their mind. You can help us turn around quotes more quickly (and ensure the smooth running of installation jobs) by providing these details to us. The following questions are standard for almost every PC we sell. So if you have the answers ready, we can quote you quickly and set the job up exactly the way you want it!

  • Does it need a monitor?
  • Does it need a printer?
  • Does it need any particular drives such as CD or DVD writer?
  • Is it a replacement PC or additional PC?

For replacement PC's:

  • Whose PC is it?
  • Does the email account need transferring?
  • When the new PC comes it will only have Microsoft Office on it. Are there other programs that need to be installed?
  • Do you have the disks and installation codes for any software not brought from us?
  • Are there any other personalised settings you need to retain from your old PC? E.g. screensaver, icon sizes etc...
  • What will happen to their old PC? Does it need to be reconfigured/securely wiped/disposed of?
  • You can assist further by moving any documents you want to keep into your My Documents folder or onto the server.

For additional PC's:

  • How will it connect to your network? Wireless or wired?
  • If wired, is there a spare a spare network point near the PC? Is there a safe cable route? If not we may need to survey the site.
  • Does it need to join your server?
  • Does it need Office and Antivirus?
  • Is it for a new or existing member of staff? What is their name?
  • If new member of staff, do they need a server account and/or email address setting up?
  • Do we need to transfer any data from another PC to the new one?
