Backup for Email
Thursday, 08 March 2007

Ever wondered how you can backup email? If you use Microsoft Outlook XP or 2003 and you DON'T have a Server backup, there is a simple and convenient way to incorporate your full entire profile (that's email, calendar and contacts) into your regular backup routine. By downloading and installing the Personal Folders Backup Utility from Microsoft, you will gain an extra option to 'Backup' in the file menu within Outlook.

This option allows you either to run a 'one-off' backup or to schedule a regular backup. Unlike the 'archive' feature (which effectively just moves old items out of the way), backup will actually take a copy of your profile - as a, PST file - and put it wherever you like. This means that you can keep a copy of your profile on a personal device like a memory stick or on a network share/mapped drive which gets backed up routinely anyway. If your profile gets corrupted, deleted or damaged you can easily restore your entire email structure as well as your calendar and contacts, from this one PST file!
