Backup. We are of course asked about it all the time. Over the years, we’ve used many different backup solutions, from the highly accomplished ‘Backup Exec’ for servers, to simple scripts that run as a scheduled task. The problem with Backup Exec is not only its expense but also it has to run on a server. The scripts are all well and good but because they run in the background and don’t offer a lot of configurability or reporting, we’re never really sure if they are running or not, and they are prone to fail for odd reasons such as password changes.
Enter SyncBack Freeware Edn. SyncBack is a great little utility that’s easy to install and configure. Put simply it will take a backup from any ‘source ’location on your network to any ‘destination’ location. The backup can either be a regular backup or a ‘synchronisation’ of these files. Ideal for personal backups to a USB Hard Drive, or backups of a network drive to a laptop that gets taken offsite, SyncBack just seems to be one of those ‘set it and forget it’ little utilities that does the job wonderfully. You can download it here: http://www.2brightsparks.com/freeware/freeware-hub.html.
