Intelligent Message Filtering
Tuesday, 30 January 2007

Exchange server 2003 in combination with EFS (Email forwarding system) now present a powerful tool in the weapon against spam. Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 with Service pack 2 applied includes a revamped version of its intelligent Message Filtering (IMF) software -- a filter applied to all messages which updates itself with definitions of what is and isn't spam.

The filter scores all messages it receives and allows your Server Administrator to set two levels at which messages get marked as spam. The first level ensures that the mail is dealt with by the server itself (either deleted or archived into a separate folder) so that the recipient does not get the message. The second level is the point at which a message gets forwarded to the recipient but goes straight into their Junk Mail Folder. It also features a 'whitelist' (senders that are definitely not spam) and 'blacklist' (senders that definitely are spam).

IMF has been implemented at several ESP - supported sites and has proven to be a big success, with levels of spam being cut by 80-90%.

Exchange IMF is free in itself but does require some configuration. It also does have some technical requirements that must be in place. If you are a client of ESP and are interested in enabling IMF, please contact us.
