You may have seen a small orange box containing the letters RSS on some websites recently. RSS is a technology being taken up very quickly and is likely to become an essential part of website development in the very near future. RSS aka ‘Really Simple Syndication’ is a common standard for the formatting of news content displayed online. An RSS reader or News Aggregator can ‘suck’ this content from your chosen websites without you having to visit them. With RSS then, you are able to subscribe (it’s free!) to websites showing news of interest to you – whether politics, sport, local affairs or IT – you are creating your own personalised news source which is updated when new articles are published!RSS readers are available as standalone pieces of software or, more commonly, are integrated with the popular Firefox web browser. However, Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 7 (currently available in Beta version) will feature an integrated RSS reader, and with the weight of the software giant behind the protocol it is certain to become more prevalent in the future – make sure you build RSS functionality into major website developments now!
