There is a simple and free way of doing all of the above by installing what is know as a PDF printer or writer. This software installs in the ‘Printers’ area of the computer. When you open any document that needs to be converted to PDF format, just print it (File > Print) and select the PDF Printer instead of your usual printer. This will then convert the document and prompt you for a location to save it to. Obviously this process does not change the original document.
