Microsoft Office Product Use Rights |

In a world where you can download software for nothing, or subscribe to powerful Online versions of popular software, Microsoft Office can be an expensive product even with the huge discount enjoyed by not-for-profit organisations that are eligible to buy it at as part of a Volume Licence agreement at ‘Education’ pricing bands. One of the more obscure things about this form of Licence is that it carries additional Product Use Rights (PUR) compared to other forms of licence.
The PUR for Microsoft Office (Volume Licence) includes so-called Work-at-Home rights and also Portable Use rights. Under Work-at-Home, you can legitimately install your copy of Office at home and use it for work purposes (subject to a few caveats). Portable Use rights also mean that you can install a second copy of Office on a laptop that you own and exclusively operate (provided you have a copy installed on your work PC too). This handy little tweak to the standard Product Use Rights means that many home and mobile workers effectively have a blessing from Microsoft to use Office.
